Project for Nader Tehrani’s Architecture in an Expanded Field Studio.
The brief was to design an expansion of the University of Melbourne’s architecture school, while taking into account the complexities of an already built out campus. This proposal keeps the plaza (the “concrete lawn”) intact as an important public space and pushes the studios and select lecture halls below ground. The existing courtyard typology is used here as an integral way to get light and air down into the important programmed spaces below. Studios and lecture halls are arranged according to their natural daylighting needs and their relative visibility as symbols of all the work going on inside.
